We all have those days when we get into the arena and just don’t know what to do. For this reason we’ve teamed up with Anne Ratcliffe (BHS II SM MSc. Equine Studies) to give you a helping hand:
Work through all the following changes of rein. Start with the most straight forward ones and progress through to the most difficult.
The pace you choose, walk, trot or canter (or some of each), will depend upon your horses’ level of fitness and their stage of training. For example an unfit or inexperienced horse may be able to do straight lines such as across the diagonal in trot, but would be better in walk for half ten metre circles. A fit and very experienced horse could manage any of the movements even in canter, incorporating counter-canter or flying changes.
Working through all of these movements will ensure that you have worked for an equal amount on the left and right reins.
The movements will help to keep your horse interested and you can focus on your accuracy.
- Across the long diagonal eg. FXH, MXK.
- Short diagonal eg. FE, KB.
- Centre line A to C.
- Across the arena E to B.
- Two half 20m circles. A to X and X to C.
- Two half 10m circles. E to X and X to B.
- Four looped serpentine.
- Half 15m circle and return to the track by the quarter marker.
- Half 10m circle and return to the track by the quarter marker.
- Half 10m circle and return to the track by the half way marker.
