Equo’s trainer in the spotlight features recommended and talented riders from across the country. This week dressage trainer Luke Baber-Davies tells us more about his team and horses…
My name is Luke Baber-Davies and together with my partner and dedicated team we run Team LBD Dressage. Team LBD specialises in all things dressage, offering tuition, clinics, training and also competition, training and sales liveries.
We are based at Chailey Stud Equestrian Centre in East Sussex with some great facilities. We are very lucky to be based here, which boasts 15 internal Monarch stables, two huge 35x60m indoor and outdoor arenas, a covered six horse walker, solariums and lots of other great top-class facilities.
We also have some fantastic sponsors who support us along our journey. These include Harry Dabbs Saddlery and Olympus Saddlery, who supply and maintain our saddles, Horse First and their supplements (crucial for keeping our horses looking tip-top), EQ-PR Equestrian Marketing and PR and the amazing FMBs Therapy Systems with their Activo-Med range of equipment. Without our sponsors none of this would be possible and each are valuable members of Team LBD.
We are also extremely lucky to own two great horses, which will make the 2016 season very exciting. We own Zephyra who is our 11-year-old Grand-Prix dressage mare (Don Primero x Wellington). We have owned Zephyra for six years and she will be making her Grand-Prix debut next year. We also own Keystone Disaronno (Tiddler) who is a six-year-old gelding (Dimaggio x Fürstenreich). We acquired Tiddler earlier in the year and he has really gotten to grips with his work and has a very exciting future ahead of him. Next year we have our own foal, owned by Sarah Hollick, coming into work who is by our Grand-Prix mare Zephyra and Florencio II.
Team LBD also couldn’t exist without help and support from our wonderful owners. Fitzgerald (also know as Gerald) is owned by Jayne Lancashire. Gerald is a five-year-old gelding (Wynton x Lancet) with movement to die for. We also have Flora, who is a three-year-old mare (Glock’s Voice x Weltmeyer) owned by Tracey Jordan. Flora has a very exciting future ahead of her. Another of our horses is Graffiti LH (or Eric), a five-year-old gelding (Negro x Don Frederico) owned by Robert and Nicola Lickey. These horses are valuable members of our team alongside some other great horses based with us at Chailey Stud.
I spent the last year riding and training at Van Olst Horses with five times Olympic Danish rider Anne Van Olst. This gave me such a valuable insight into the world of Olympic level training with some of the worlds best horses, including Lord Leatherdale, who I was lucky enough to train and ride at some of the biggest stallion shows throughout Holland and Germany.
Spending time with Anne in Holland has enabled me to bring her knowledge back to the UK in my own personalised manner. This has proved hugely popular, with great feedback from clients who have come for lessons, clinics, training and even those who keep their horses with us and have noticed a huge difference in how they are going.
The most important thing to remember is to “Go out, have fun, but most of all enjoy it” and then you will achieve your goals and realise your ambitions.
